Help I need to go to the dentist......Help/Advice Please?

The thing is the last time i went to my dentist was about 3 or 4 years ago i am 18 years old NOW, when i went those 3 or 4 years ago my dentist drilled my tooth without any needle so i could feel all the pain and it REALLY hurt i was supposed to go back for a filling but i was so scared i didn't go back since then a few of my teeth have broken or chipped and the tooth i had drilled has still not been repaired my little sister has since been to a different dentist as she had a bad expeience with my old dentist too she said her new dentist was lovely and he gave her something to numb the pain even the nurse held her hand for her and she is 15 i really need to go to this new dentist and i think i would be ok once i got there as but i can't seem to find that bit of courage to make an appointment or to go in and meet the dentist, I think it is genrally to do with the fear of pain but i am also abit ashamed of my teeth how can i find the courage to finally do it? Please help! ? thanks :P

Help I need to go to the dentist......Help/Advice Please?
Hi,

I had a terrible time getting my mum to see a dentist because she had a terrible phobia and was just terrified at the mention of a dentist. She hadn't been too the dentist for 29 years suffering regularly with mouth abscesses, ulcers etc.

I found her a dentist that specialises in nervous patients and she loved him and never felt a thing throughout months of treatment, extractions, denture fittings etc!

3 to 4 years is not that long and you know you will regret it if you leave it longer so don't wait until your teeth are badly rotted because by then you will have zero confidence and his job will be a lot harder.

When my mum told him she was embarrassed to open her mouth he started by showing her a book of patients teeth that were much worse than hers, believe me they have seen it all.

If your still not sure you can do it, think of all the children in hospitals across the world and what they have to go through just to stay alive and who somehow in their darkest hours can still look at you and smile!!

Make your appointment today and my thoughts are with you.xxx GOOD LUCK
Reply:belive me trust me when i had a dentised appointment i was frightend to death my mum and dad took me i was 6 years old and i had four injections one day they just feel like someones pinching you thats all so dont be affraid you just be brave and go i would it wont hurt your more scared to go because your scaring yourself belive go nope bad will happen im 15 and i recently had my year 10 injections they dont hurt at all be brave gooooood luuuuuuuuck
Reply:Phone this new dentist and explain exactly what you have told us.
Reply:I was like this at your age too....I had a bad experience. The only tip I can give you is to make the appointment and then not think about it...every time you think about it just do something to distract yourself...when it is time to go, get someone to go with you and you can let the dentist know in advance that you are very nervous...they take this into account and are very kind to you....remember hat on your first visit they wont even treat you...they'll just look...so you can relax in that knowledge.

I take a piece of Plasticine and squash it in my hand whilst they treat me..it is a good distraction.....go....its better than rotten teeth
Reply:Phone the dentist and make the appt. Tell them what happened with your old dentist. They will understand - you're not the first person to be terrified of the dentist. Take a friend/relative to hold your hand. I always go with my mum to hold hers! And just think of the beautiful teeth you will have afterwards - it will be worth it I promise! Good luck!
Reply:I was scared of the dentist till I had to go.

I found a dentist in Brighton called Raj, he was brilliant.

Just make the appointment and tell them that you are scared, on the first vist they will probably just have a look to see what needs to be done without any drilling or injections.

Tell them you are aprehensive.

They are there to help you afterall.
Reply:I used to love going dentist when i was young but now at 38, i feel sick just thinking about it BUT saying that, i still go when i need to. I've lost so many teeth over the years as they were breaking and chipping and i wasn't getting them re-filled. U must go or u cld end up looking worse than u say u do now. My children see that i go and i show no fear which gives them the courage to sit in the dentists chair. My youngest who is 7 had to of her baby teeth pulled out 2 weeks ago. She had injections but didn't cry as she knows that mummy doesn't cry either. Go for it, u'll regret it if u don't!!
Reply:brush your teeth 20 times brush down and up burning morning and night
Reply:Bad dentists can put you off going. I stopped for six years as a teenager as I was fed up with one who was rough and overly fond of the slow drill - however, even he made sure I had plenty of anasthetic. There was loads to do when I finally went to another gentler dentist, aged 17.

Don't blame yourself. Ask around to find out if there are any good dentists in your area. You should never be expected to have fillings without injections.

Some British NHS dentists just do it to save money I think. I've been asked if I am willing to have it done without anasthetic and said no.

It is important to find a good dentist but that can be difficult on the NHS in Britain. Don't know about other countries.
Reply:Tell them you do not consent to treatment unless they give you anaesthetic first. If you don't consent, then they can't treat you, legally. You should not have been given treatment like that without it, thats discusting and we are not in the third world!
Reply:I fee3l for you, I really do, but you need to get your teeth sorted out. If your sister has found a caring dentist then make an appointment with them for a check up. Whilst you are there you can tell them that you are terrified, and no one will laugh, rather they will reassure you and help you, and also make sure that if they are going to do anything they make sure that you won't feel a thing.

Please trust someone, otherwise you are storing up trouble for later life.

Good luck.
Reply:hi

i feel for you because i too am terrified of dentists, but with the help of this website ive included and finding a very sympathetic and understanding dentist for phobics i have undergone quite a lot of treatment. when i went for my first appointment i asked could i just go for a chat and they said that was fine, the dentist asked what my fears were and he understood then we decided for me to have a signal if i wanted him to stop during any treatment, maybe this would work for you, give it a try .

good luck
