My dentist has refused my preferred treatment, how can i challenge him?

At 23 I have extremely crooked teeth. I was bullied in school, people stare and it ruins my self confidence. This is not a sob story, I understand human nature.

I am a student and should be attending university this October. I explained to my new NHS dentist that I wanted my top front six teeth removed and replaced with a partial denture (£200-300) until such a time that I could afford implants. My dentist refused but explained that he might be able to do two separate bridges at the cost of 2 - 3k. He refused my partial denture because of my age. I explained that I couldn’t afford 2 - 3k. He referred me to an orthodontic specialist. His rate is £130.00 for 30 mins, not to mention the cost of the treatment.

My question to you guys is this, if at 23 a man can have his penis removed during gender altering surgery then why cant I have request to have my teeth removed taken seriously? How do I challenge my dentist and who is my first point of contact?

My dentist has refused my preferred treatment, how can i challenge him?
I agree, get a different dentist if you are serious. There are going to be docs, dentists, or whatever in their professions that have their own personal thoughts of what is right/wrong. In this dentists opinion, he feels it is wrong to give you the partial denture at your young age. Did you ask him why? I know you have your reasons why you want it done...and maybe his reasons would be of no concern to you, but you should probably take into serious consideration as to why he is so against it. I am guessing though, if it is something you really want, you can get it done...you just have to find a dentist that will be okay with it.

Have you, however, thought about another solution to this issue with your teeth? I am guessing that your teeth are otherwise healthy and fine (which is probably why the dentist is hesitant). If so, maybe you should look into another way to feel more confident about it. Such as getting a few books (in the self help section) that address this issue, you would be surprised at what little things you can read/hear from someone that really make an impact (obviously you know, in the opposite end of the spectrum). You will never get everyone around you to be okay with something about you that is "different"..but you most certainly work on making yourself okay with it..and that can make all the difference in the world.

Reply:Kind of agree with your dentist currently in the process of major dental work...it is a lot of money...but at least you'll still have your teeth...

Try shopping around different dentists...different prices or contact the NHS directly and ask if there's anything they can do...they pay for things sometimes if you convince them its ruining your life...

Keep banging on their door till they hear you out!!

Reply:You have the right to make a complaint about any aspect of NHS treatment using the NHS complaints procedure. To use the procedure you must usually be a patient or a former patient of the practitioner or institution concerned, although it is possible to complain on behalf of someone else. If you want to complain on behalf of another person, the hospital or practice must agree that you are a suitable representative.

Reply:get a second opinion! if all the dentists you talked to (excluding quacks, liers, and rip-off artists) have the same answer, got to listen to them. unless of course they can come up with another idea that costs less, you'll have to weight it out. as for the men you said who could , ahem, have their penis removed, if the doctors were female, they must not care. if they were men, they must be gay and understanding, or they want more money which the patient can provide. but then again,it's possible that they, too, don't care.
Reply:I'm a woman and have 2 very painful abscess under my bridge for months and have had too many courses of antibiotics. My dentist told me that the NHS no longer fund expensive treatment, bridge work or root canal treatment which i need. He referred me to the London hospital of dentistry hoping they may fund it, no chance. They then kindly offered to remove the tooth but as its the tooth holding my bridge i would loose 5 teeth to the side and front of my mouth, how attractive. As i gave up work to care for my child with disabilities, i cant afford the hundred of pounds it would cost so I'm now having to drain puss from my gums every few hours so try and stop the build up. Unfortunately, this is now the state of our NHS service.not enough resources to cover the influx of people coming into the country who also need dental treatment. The government must make money available for cases like this. As for a challenge, i don't know but if you do anything, let me know. BTW, a woman i know has just had breast implants, on the NHS of course!
Reply:The dentist is legally obliged to do treatment that is clinically necessary - removing teeth that are sound just because you don't like them cosmetically is crazy. A partial denture can lead to gum disease and the loss of your other teeth. they need taking out at night - not attractive when you pull someone at the student bar and take them home for the night! That's if you pull cos dentures lead to halitosis ( bad breath) so no one would come near you anyway! Implants to replace the missing teeth will cost roughly £10,000 from a reputable trust worthy dentist. ( of course it's cheaper if you want to go somewhere abroad were their cross-infection standards and clinical skills are questionable) . Then you'll probably need bone grafting as if the implants aren't placed within 3 months of the removal of you're own teeth then you start to loose bone so they will need to graft bone from your hip to replace it.Instead of criticising your dentist thank him he's saving you a lot of problems in the future.
