Is my Dentist trying to scam me?

I recently went to a dentist cause one of my teeth had cracked in half.

The dentist told me that i would need a root canal since the tooth was in bad shape.

The entire root canal procedure was scheduled over 4 visits. On my last visit..the 3rd one, she told me that my last and final visit would involve putting on the crown, thus capping my damaged tooth.

However, she also said that I should have the wisdom tooth next to my damaged tooth removed as well. She said that my crown had would a better chance of staying on and be a better fit. She also told me that she knew a good oral surgeon who could do the procedure and could refer me.

Since this would involve going to a specialist, going under surgery, and taking time off from work, I told her I would like to pass.

She got a bit annoyed and said it was her professional opinion that I should have my wisdom tooth removed. She then told me to schedule an second opinion with another dentist in the same office.

What should I do?

Is my Dentist trying to scam me?
If you feel like it would reassure you to get a second opinion, do it.

The reason she really wants your wisdom teeth remove is that, as they grow, they push and move the other teeth around, as well as modifying your mandible bone (or maxilla). If that happens, you'll most likely loose your crown and won't be able to put in another. You'd be stuck with having one less tooth in your mouth or would have to wear a prothesis.

If you have doubts, consult elsewhere. Don't just skip the issue altogether or you'll end with more trouble than just missing ½ day of work...
Reply:yes she is i say u get a new one or just never go to the dentsit
Reply:maybe get a second opinion with another dentist but not in the same office get it somewhere else because that is how dentist make there money i took my daughter for a tooth cleaning and ended up paying more because it so happens that she needed a root canal and i paid alot of money extra because my insurance had already covered for xrays and the cleaning so i had to pay the rest out of my own pocket ...beware of dentist oh and another thing if your tooth doesnt hurt yet then its not your wisdom tooth, the wisdom tooth can be very painful...good luck
Reply:Get a second opinion from a dentist in a completely different practice. But - I have a suspicion she might be right - I don't think she's scamming you. Wisdom teeth can cause a lot of problems for surrounding teeth - and they don't have to hurt to be a problem. Still, she should have been more professional about your concerns.

By the way, if it comes down to your wisdom teeth, and you end up at an oral surgeon, ask if all 4 should go. It makes sense to get it all done at once and not go through it multiple times. It's not that bad of an experience.
Reply:Obviously two of these answers are from people who know absolutley NOTHING about dentistry and should not be answering any questions on this board whatsoever. The reason to get the wisdom tooth out is because it is likely impacted and that means that it is basically butting against the tooth that will be capped. This can cause a defect to form in the bone behind the capped tooth or can even result in the capped tooth starting to be resorbed (dissolved basically), either way when you are making a large investment in a root canal and a cap it is wise to do everything you can to make sure that your investment will last. In this case this involves taking out the wisdom tooth. I can assure you that as she is refering you out to get it done she makes absolutely not one cent from you getting this tooth removed as the most she will ever see from the surgeon who does it (as well as many other cases that she sends over) is a christmas fruit basket
Reply:sounds about right to me.... By the way getting your wisdom teeth out is really not as bad as people make it out to be. I had the 2 on my right side done while awake and was no big deal and then a few weeks later the 2 on the left side done while awke again not a big deal...Yes you might be a little swollen for a few days but really if you have a crown in the back like that prob a good idea to get that wisdom tooth out.
Reply:I have had lots of dental work done and agree with those that say you should get the wisdom tooth removed - your dentist sounds like she knows what she's talking about.
