Dentist help please?

I've moved to cheltenham and haven't seen a dentist in 2 years as I can't really afford it. I'm on £12 a year and I need a tooth I chipped around 2 1/2 years ago sorting out but I phoned up my local dentist and it costs £80 to join- I feel physically sick. Is this normal, to include registration and one check up. I thought around £20-30 for a check up was what I paid last time- what do you pay. There are no dentists currently taking patients round here, the internet search suggested I go to London!

Dentist help please?
Hi,Im a dentist in Ireland.

I never heard of a fee to join a surgery, this baffles me.
Reply:Well I haven't seen a dentist for a lot, lot, longer, and I cracked a tooth three years ago.

I find it all such a scam that I don't really believe I'll ever see a dentist again.

Do you know that it used to be a popular wedding present to pay for the bride to have all her teeth removed and false ones made, just to avoid the sort of problems you're facing.

Seems we may return to the old ways - watch out.
Reply:yeah its normal...this is why i refuse to go to the dentist....for me its free for another 3 months as im only 17, however i wont go anyway as my dentist is a butcher and it costs around £100 to join elsewhere...not to mention the fact that the registers are so full nowadays!!
Reply:Find out where your nearest dental hospital %26amp; call round all surrounding dentists. It can be hard in certain areas now to get on the nhs.

Good luck there is nothing worse than having tooth ache
Reply:Go to pub , isult the biggest uliest person. And when they Knock out your teeth. Get crimimal compation to pay for your teeth.Umm.
Reply:I'm proud to make this statement that in India we have very advance dental facilities and my cousin-in-law's daughter flew all the way from England to India to get route canal done.It is cheaper and the best. So think it over? Indian Doctors are all over because they are good.

Take prior appointment and you can visit India to solve your dental problems.
Reply:you don't have to see some one in the area of where you live you can go anywhere within the UK.

the price you have been given should also include x-ray that can be between 2-4 but you will have ask.

a check up on it own will cost around £40-£50. and on top of that if you need a clean you will have to pay extra.

if the tooth is don't given you pain at this time then don't ask about it when you call just ring up anywhere and ask if they are taking on NHS patients and book in for a check up after seeing then ask about the tooth.

good luck NHS dentist are very hard to find due to the gov changes, and only given Dentist x amounts of money they find it hard to do treatment now as they are losing money out of they pockets.

Reply:Considering you are paying for registration also, the price may be little higher. The registration is done to ensure you return to the same dentist. You saved on already not visiting any dentist in 2 years!! Uncle Cyril above has a point but your needs are too little to venture for treatment abroad; otherwise you could also been a beneficiary of dental care and India tour.
Reply:An £80 joining up fee? for the love of Christ you want to join a dental surgery not some members only club!

This dentist sounds like he's a private dentist and sadly can charge what he likes.

From April 1st 2006 a new nhs dental contract was introduced and this included scrapping the registration of patients, this simply means that if a dental surgery is claiming to be a nhs practise and is taking on new patients and have space on their books, they cannot refuse to see you claiming that you are not a registered patient with them as there is no such thing as registration!

A standard nhs check will cost you £15.90 and includes xrays and a scale/polish which is now only carried out at the discretion of the dentist.

Try getting in contact with you local Primary Care Trust and explain your difficulty at finding a dentist who will take you on and not charge you the earth before even seeing you and hopefully they should be able to help you!

Good Luck
Reply:One suggestion is to join HSA or something like that. Pay dentist - get receipt and then claim it back then quit the policy?

Costs a dam sight less than dentists

I am allegedly entitled to "free" dental treatment except the nearest NHS dentist for emergency cases only is a 150 mile round trip so frankly I would rather be all gummy. If it wasn't for HSA I would be screwed
