Dentist perscribed LORAZEPAM.....Serious Answers Only...?

I'm in the process of getting Full Dentures. I have already had my impressions done. Now it's time for extractions. My problem is that I get very upset and I cry. I dont like the dentist. I get very anxious before appointment. I cannot differentiate pain from pressure. The dentist is only able to pull 1 tooth a visit. My last visit my Blood pressure went very high (172/??) My next visit I need to take 1 tablet before bedtime and 1 more tablet 1 hour before my appointment. 1 mg. tablets. aka (Ativan)

Is this normal dose? Is this common in some patients? I have Medi-cal, Can this dentist refer me to another dentist so then I can be fully sedated for all extractions all at once? I live in California. Any info is appreciated.

Dentist perscribed LORAZEPAM.....Serious Answers Only...?
This dose is not an abnormal dose. Just don't drive while taking it. I don't know if your insurance will cover sedation but it is worth calling them and asking. Ativan is a great drug for calming down anxiety and is worth a try. While I work in a hospital I give plenty of my patients ativan. I've seen it given 2 mg every 4-6 hours so you are not even close to max doses- the dentist probably just doesn't want to knock your socks off with it
Reply:That's not abnormal at all. Have you tried what they call "laughing gas"? I'm deathly afraid of the dentist myself so don't feel bad.
Reply:lorazepam is great ive taken it before you will feel relaxed but not sedated or "out of it" not off of 1 mg anyway maybe 2 mg . if this is your first time taking it dont prepare to drive around or make any plans you will probably just wanna relax at home for the rest of the day.
Reply:its possible to refer you to a clinic with sedation for extraction.

But since there is an option of such anti- anxiety drug to prescribe , its always good to give a try with that. your bp level is also not that favorable .

since anti anxitey drug is in a very minimal dose ,its normal in dental extraction cases.since the dentist is aware of the options you be confident and give it a try for once.if you are still crying on the chair you can ask dentist to refer...

hope this help...
