Can a dentist refuse to see you?

ok im pregnant and i had a dentist appoitment and they told me i needed papers from my doc stating that the dentist can see me and treat me whatever i had them faxed over . My dentist did not want to do work on me. is he allowed to do that. ?? people think just because your pregnant that you cant got to the dentist well you can. So i ended up having to goto one of those walk-in clinics and i waited probably about 6hrs no joke. and they had to pull my tooth out. i was in serious pain. all day so my question is can a dr refuse to treat you.

A DENTIST MAY REFUSE TO SEE ANY PATIENT HE DOESN'T WANT TO SEE, BUT IF THIS DENTIST DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE PROPER TREATMENT OF PREGNANT WOMEN, HE SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST REFERRED YOU OUT TO SOMEONE CONFIDENT IN THEIR OWN DENTISTRY.


AS AN EMERGENCY WALK-IN THE LONG WAIT IS NOT UNCOMMON, WHEREAS THE LACK OF TREATMENT BY THE FIRST DENTIST IS OUT OF THE NORM.,
Reply:the doctor has every right to refuse treatment. we don't know if there are complications with your pregnancy or if it is normal or not. ask your OB for a referral. brush and floss well.
Reply:i'm guessing that he didn't want to give you a sedative or any type of stuff to knock you out because he didn't want to hurt your baby...can't say that i blame him for that...
Reply:Yes, ur dentist has that right. But more likely since ur pregnant, he did not want to pull ur tooth, cuz they give u anesth. to numb it, %26amp; didn't want to risk it cuz of the baby. Also maybe they needed xray %26amp; ur not suppose to get xray while w/ child!

A dentist is hesitant to work on pregnant women because the microbes in plaque can cause serious health issues (including meningitis and fetal death) if these bacteria get into your blood stream (especially in immunocompromised pregnant women)... which is what happens say when you get a tooth pulled, even just during a cleaning if the hygenist scrapes your gum. Usually they will premedicate pregnant women with antibiotics before the treament, but that's usually only for a cleaning. I can see why the dentist was hesitant to pull your tooth. I'm disapointed he didn't explain this to you though!!!

For some reason he was uncomfortable in doing the dental work. No idea why or what your OB said in the fax.

Reply:ya.... dentist may refuse to see pregnant women, as in pregnancy there r morphological changes in d gums. Gums bcme red n oedematous as therez changes in vasculature of gums.. it occurs due to increase in oestrogen hormones in d pregnant women..... This is known as PREGNANCY INDUCED GINGIVITIS... During extraction, gums may bleed a lot.. so therez always a risk for excessive bleeding which may b fatal.. Actually the vessels in d gums bcme more permeable than normal. so there r less chances of healing or stopping of blood....


So dentist may refuse to see you as he/she needs confirmation abt ur vascular health, so that he/she can operate on u without risks....

Reply:dentistry to pregnant women is done in emergent situations, not routine dentistry. you situation was emergent and he should have seen you. any dr or dentist can refuse to see you for any reason. i like mexico better for many reasons and this is one of them. they don't put you though all that.
