Dentist cracked my Wisdom Tooth during Extraction?

I went in on Tuesday to get my lower wisdom tooth extracted, and my dentist had a really tough time getting it out. He was twisting and pulling the best I can recollect.....then Crack!!!!! When he finally did get it out, he pointed out that one of the prongs or roots had snapped off from the tooth itself...presumably from the crack noise we all heard. My dentists said that the roots doesn't get infected and that after the extraction site heals, everything will be fine. I don't know but it kind of worries me. Has anyone experienced this or am I the only one? What are the possible effects of this? I'm not buying what my dentist is telling me.

I am pretty sure that root CAN get infected. The nerve of the tooth is now exposed so you will get all kinds of bacteria and food in there before the hole closes up. It is a simple procedure to get a single root out. They take what looks like a screwdriver and just pop it out with a bit of lever action. He should have removed the whole tooth. In the meantime, make sure you keep it clean (without removing the clot - you don't want dry socket).
Reply:get a good Attorney Report It

Reply:serious you should get a lawyer to sue the bastard for malpractice Report It

Reply:Well every doctor or dentist does a botch job sooner or later.
Reply:Nope, they had to crack mine to get them out too.
Reply:I'm pretty sure the roots can get infected.. isn't that what a Root Canal is for?
Reply:That actually happens alot during extractions. As long as the dentist removed the roots and all the broken tooth pieces you will be fine. They should of taken an xray afterwards to make sure all the tooth structure was removed. If he did leave the roots in there then you will have problems. Make sure all of the tooth was removed, roots included.
Reply:He's right- why should u not believe him.?Its perfectly in order to leave a bit of root in-often less hassle than getting out what is actually a very small bit of root.

Why ask on this site, rather than the dentist...........also, how would he benefit from not telling u the truth?
Reply:you'll be ok, wisdom teeth are very difficult to remove because they have three roots on them as opposed to one like in your front teeth. if it doesn't get infected then why pay the extra money to go to an oral surgeon to get a root tip removed? good luck!!!

  1. It's important to make sure you take care of your teeth. One of the best ways to take of your teeth is to have a knowledgeable, skilled family dentist. Not every family dentist is the same, so it's important to take the time to make sure you select one who will meet the needs of you and your family.
