Dentist career?
Talk to your school counselor / advisor to see what you need to do. As for what to study before you get accepted in dental school, you would be best to major in something like chemistry, biology or zoology. These will best prepare you for dental school. Plan on 8 yrs of school to be a general dentist and 2-4 yrs more if you want to specialize. Good luck!!
Reply:Most dentists have a 4 year bachelors degree and then go off to dental school for an additional 4 years. It is actually only required by most dental schools to have 2 years of classes (instead of a bachelors degree) w/ the DAT, to be accepted, though barley anyone does that. There are also accelerated programs w/predental and dental programs combined. I would just keep researching the careers that you are interested in. You could also shadow a dentist. There is a book called the Occupational Outlook Handbook that also has this information, and I think that it is listed online for free. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Reply:Hi! Actually in the US you must have a four year degree majoring in science and then 4 years of dental school and 1-2 years of clinic. If you specialize that is another 3 years..ie Ortho, endo and 2 more on top of that for Surgical. So plan at least 9 years of schooling. In some countrys you can get it in 4, but you do not have the ability to do much past hygiene and general dentistry and that really restricts your income and ever having your own practice. In the US the average cost for school is about 200,000.00. Setting up a practice is about 100,000.00. The overhead, paying office manager, assistants and Ins is a lot!! So be prepared to work VERY hard and be patient. It takes a long time and pays off after about 10 years. M
Reply:You need a bachlor's degree in science. After that there are many dental schools to get into.
Reply:Many schools prefer but do not require a Bachelor's degree in a science field. There are numerous pre requisites such as chem, organic and inorganic, physics, bio, microbio and so on. Usually a Bachelor's in Nutrition will cover them all. Go to ADA.org website and follow links to education and dental schools, then go to each website and find each schools pre requisites. It's much more than an Associate degree, the same for Veterinarian by the way. The pre requisites are pretty much the same to get into medical, dental, or veterinary schools. A lot of science. An associates won't get you near enough credits or the classes you need. Dont' be afraid to go for it though, it's an investment in your future. Student loans are very handy and in Dentistry you should have no problem paying them off when your done. Just go for it! Best of luck to you.
