Step daughter's dentist is a scientologist and mom wants us to switch. What would you do?

My bonus daughter is 16. My hubby has physical custody and he and his ex have joint legal custody. We just gave her an updated doctor list for both girls. She wrote my hubby a letter and in it expressed that she wants my bonus daughter to change dentists because the two dentists that own the practice are "hard-core Scientologists." Bonus daughter has hmo medicaid and it is the only dentist that we have found that accepts her insurance and was accepting new patients. We paid out of pocket for years until we found them. We have been very happy with this dentist. They are professional and convenient and the Scientology, although we don't really agree with their belief system, doesn't bother us. My suggestion to hubby is that we tell mom if she can find a dentist in the area that accepts daughter's insurance and has the same level of care as current dentist then we will take her there. Hubby doesn't want to switch. He says they're a good dentist and their religious beliefs don't matter.

You should not switch. And I think your suggestion (if she can find a better one) is a very mature and friendly way to handle the situation! Kudos for you being the bigger person. Also, if she tried to make it a legal matter it wouldn't hold up in court because she's being prejudice.

P.S. Lovin' the "bonus" daughter!
Reply:if you are happy with the care, that is whats important-you cant take her to an inferior dentist because someone doesnt like thier religous beliefs
Reply:I think that as long as they act professionally and do not bring up their religion, then I would stick with them.
Reply:I like your ultimatum. If you can do better, we'll switch...

In the meantime, remind her that teeth don't have religions, just people do. A scientologist isn't likely to do anything a catholic or jewish dentist wouldn't do.

By the way, does she know anything about Scientology? I am not a fan, per se, but what they believe is "interesting"... The stories may put your bonus daughter out like a light saving you a few bucks on anesthesia...lol

Good luck. Its hard to keep your teeth when all the best tasting stuff ruins them...
Reply:1. one thing is wrong, you need to except your Step daughter as yours. (not a step or a bonus ) be a Friend to her.

2. get your 16 daughters thoughts about it.

3. your right, if the ex can find a dentist in the area that accepts your insurance and has the same level of care then think about changing.
Reply:why on earth does it matter what religion the dentist is? I don't really understand the objection. The mother would probably be just as prejudiced if the dentist was a Muslim or a Jew or something. Maybe she thinks the dentist will try and 'convert' the girl while she's in the surgery!
Reply:In my opinion Scientology is a dangerous cult... that being said as long as they are not trying to convert any of you then I see no problem.

There are several religions I am not fond of but I don't let that factor into if a use a service or not.
Reply:Hubby has a good head on his shoulders, for sure.

But the ex does have the Right to have a Say in the

matter...

I agree with the husband, that if the insurance covers it

and the proper procedure is being done, then the "private

beliefs" don't matter (unless it is introduced, while the patient

client is there, for another purpose).

I went to a denture maker once, who belongs to a Freedom

Group, who don't believe in having drivers license, or

registering to vote, etc...and one name for them is White

Supremeist, which I don't know much about, but his personal

beliefs did not keep me from obtaining the proper services

from him...for that I think he was professional at his job..

But, if the child, is a minor, in the eyes of other people, who

might have a legal connection, it might carry some weight

so a person just has to do what is right...to ''keep the legal

prospect, in proper order'' to avoid altercations, and further

court action...
