Dentist question??

my son is 4 and i haven't taken him to the dentist yet. i know thats bad and i plan on doing it real soon. i think its because i get so nervous at the dentists office. LOL anyway, i think i found the right one so i am wondering how do i prepare him for the dentist??

Dentist question??
My son's dentist suggests getting books about going to the dentist so they know what to expect. I also told my son they'd count his teeth--he's really into counting things, so he liked that idea. You could also have your son draw a picture for the dentist to hang up in the office. My dentist used to do that, and it made it fun to go just to see my pictures hanging on his bulletin board.
Reply:Just tell him that the dentist is going to take some special pictures of his teeth to make sure they're ok, then he's going to use a super special toothbrush to get them nice and clean. It'll get him thinking the dentist is a fun place to go rather than a scary place. And whatever you do, don't express to him your nerves about the dentist! The dentist is a necessary thing, and having anxiety about it is something he can do without.
Reply:My mother worked at a dentist office so you could imagine how old my daughter was when she went to her first appointment. Anyways, I prepared my daughter by getting her some books on going to the dentist and telling her that mommy and daddy go to the dentist all the time. What I did was I scheduled a dentist appointment right before my daughters so she could see that the dentist won't hurt her. I don't know if you dentist will be the same as his but if so, I suggest that you do that. Also have someone come with you so they can watch your son if you do that.

Good Luck
Reply:The only reason you don't like the dentist is that they hurt you. They haven't hurt him yet, so he doesn't have that fear unless you put it on him. Tell him they have a cool thing called "Mr. Suckey" that sucks all the spit out of your mouth and he will beg you to let him go there. The talk of sucking spit will get any boy excited.

Most dentists have lots of toys, stickers, etc, so the kids love going there anyhow. Just make sure he takes good care of his teeth.
Reply:go to a bookshop as most of them have books that are a story of going to the dentist or doctor etc i also got my daughter the tooth fairy game she is too young to understand it properly so have simplified it and she loves it so we always say that the dentist tells the tooth fairy how well you take care of your teeth and a she gets all excited with having a big sticker as well
Reply:unless he already has major dental problems (unlikely), his trip to the dentist is going to be really easy. he presumably doesn't have gum disease or cavities or anything yet. basically, they'll check his teeth (our dentist tells the kids she's counting them), clean them (painless if you don't have gum problems), and maybe give a flouride treatment (he gets to choose the flavor) or possibly an xray (cool; he'll get to see the picture afterwards.) Don't project your fears or you'll get him nervous. my kids absolutely love going to the dentist (possibly because they get a new toothbrush and a prize from the toy bag when they go, lol). if you're really concerned, ask your local public librarian for a good recommendation for a kids' book about the dentist.
Reply:make one before his and take him with you

read a book or two about going to the dentist

watch a video or t.v. program about going to the dentist

play dentist on each other

tell him about the cool chair that goes up and down, my daughters dentist always gives her a ride in the chair and puts sunglasses on her to shield the light from her eyes and says he's looking for sugar bugs. he always gives a tooth brush and a sticker or two.
Reply:Get him a book about going to the dentist, and have him play dentist on a stuffed animal :)
Reply:Tell him he's been a bad boy, and the dentist needs to find and remove the goblins in his mouth.
